On mugging and beyond.

Hmm, the life of a Junior College Student in Singapore is really not to be trifled with, with exams, homework, relationships all thrown into one, it isn't difficult to see why this is so, especially for one who cannot manage his time well a.k.a. Me.

As we mug through our subjects now, be it physics, chemisty, economics or maths, sometimes I cannot help but wonder, what will all these be of use to us in the future? The truth is, for all that we are studying in school now, barely 50% would prove to be useful in our adult lives. Whatever job that we would be picking up, there ain't really much of a chance of us using EVERYTHING we learn on it.

I mean, the bottomline is, we are learning crap we know we won't be using in the future. So, the question is, why study?

Why suffer and cram our minds with all those information that we know will turn out useless in the future? Why not spend the time on something else more useful than learning unnecessary information? Its not practical at all.

Then we realize that in Singapore, its a "certificate hang suave"(wén píng guà shuài) society. No certificate, no talk. Even if you have the necessary skills, that piece of dried wood pulp is the only way that you can prove your worth to potential employers in the future.

And the only way of getting that wood pulp, is to be good in everything. Even subjects that don't matter. Report Cards take into account every subject that is tested in the curriculum, if you're good in everything but one subject, tough shit, looks like you're screwed. You have to be a King of all Trades to be right at the very top, in order to get the dream job that is embedded into everybody's minds.

The Singapore Education System - The perfect synonym of Inflexibility.
